Why was my son Val's prom one of the most beautiful evenings of my life?

One of the simple answers to the question of why my son Val's prom was one of the best nights of my life is that I was a proud mother. But ...

My answer to this question is made up of three parts..

  • I IMAGINED IT WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL EVENING

From the first moment I opened my eyes at 5.00 a.m. that day, I imagined that it would be one of the most beautiful evenings of my life.

As part of my morning routine, I immediately wrote in my journal that I had already experienced one of the most beautiful evenings of my life. I wrote in the past tense — that we had enjoyed ourselves, that I connected beautifully with Val’s dad and Lili, that I danced a lot, and that Val, because of all of this, had the perfect ending to his high school journey. And that’s exactly how it turned out.

The day unfolded very calmly despite the many obligations. Of course, I’ll admit that panic tried to creep in at times — worries about how everything would go. And this is where my inner work came into play. Every time my mind tried to panic, I told myself:: “Aha, I see you — you won’t get me. Everything will be okay.” Then I added a thought that truly works wonders: “I have more than enough time for everything that matters today.”

  • I WAS IN THE MOMENT

In my family, I’m known for wanting to make the most of every moment of the day — that’s my energetic land, and I love it. My husband, on the other hand, much prefers his relaxed land. Right away, we agreed that this time he would adapt and join me in my energetic land. This was Val’s day, and Val — like me — is very much a last-minute person. So I asked Gregor to follow my plan for the day. But behind this was a compromise Gregor suggested: when his daughter Lejla has her prom next month, we will all shift into the relaxed land and follow his schedule. That means leaving home earlier and being prepared well in advance — unlike this time, when on the evening before this important day, I still didn’t know what I would wear.

My opinion is that in a family no one should be above the others, in other words the boss, but we all live its life, we are wholes, but it is important that each one of us takes responsibility and adapts, because we are in a community, living under one roof, so Wholes living together.

And I can tell you this: I absolutely loved being in my energetic land. Everything flowed effortlessly, and one very important reason for that was that I was fully present — all day and all evening.

  • I USED MEL ROBBINSON'S “LET THEM" THEORY

There was one more key move I made that day. For the day to truly be beautiful, it wasn’t enough to simply imagine it as the most beautiful evening or to stay present in the moment. What was also essential was letting go of the things I didn’t like using the Let them and also applied the next step of this method, which is Let me.

Examples from the scene

Gregor was a bit nervous when he arrived at the car park, because there were only 5 minutes to go and he shook off a bit of his nervousness in the car. At that moment I said Let him, it won't stop me from making this one of the best evenings of my life and the second step Let me now enjoy.

Our daughter Lili isn’t very fond of taking photos — I am. The moment we entered the hall, I was breathless at the sight of the beautiful venue. I immediately took out my phone and started taking photos. When I then saw Val with his dance partner, I said, “Let’s take a photo.” Lili gave me an annoyed look: “Mom, please don’t start with the photos now.” And that’s when the method came in handy Let Lili complains, Let me organize the photo anyway.
In the end, it turned out to be a great decision — it’s the only photo we have of Val with his dance partner, as she left right after the dancing part of the evening.

Gregor and I love dancing, and we danced a lot. At one point, he didn’t feel like going to the dance floor. I went over to Lili and Lejla — they didn’t want to either. That didn’t stop me, I used Let them sit. Let me go dance. I looked toward the dance floor, spotted Val’s homeroom teacher dancing with the graduating students, joined them — and fully enjoyed myself.

All three steps described above were the perfect recipe for creating one of the most beautiful evenings of my life. I know I will continue creating my most beautiful life this way, because:, THE BETTER IT GETS, THE BETTER IT GETS.
